It has been proven that developing children learn a lot through play and other fun activities. When a child is still in his infant or toddler years, he will prefer to play on his own, with his preferences moving quickly from one activity to another. During this time, it is best to allow the child to play in an open space with a wide variety of toys. By the time the child reaches his preschool years, his attention span generally increases allowing him to focus on a single activity for a longer period of time. This is also the time when he realizes that it is fun to play with the other kids of his age, thus reducing his own free play to that of a structured group play. Preschool Learning Toys are designed to aid children develop specific skills while they play. The correct setup of play activities as well as the toys found in these centers is important to enable interactivity between preschoolers. There are four basic types of play activities that should be included in these learning centers. These are manipulative play, dramatic play, literacy play, and construction play. The first type of play activity is necessary for the development and fine tuning of motor skills, most specifically hand and eye coordination. Manipulative play activities should include toys which encourage the use of the finger and wrist muscles. Toys like math counters, matching cards, and lacing strings are some of the toys that should be found in this play area. On the other hand, dramatic play should encourage the children to take on role-playing by pretending to be someone else. Toys found in this area should allow children to play creatively. The toys that are right for this play area include dress-up clothes and props so that the children can take on a different role each time they play here. Tents, puppets, and dollhouses are other toys that can further dramatic play. Preschool Learning Toys should also have a place for literacy play. This is the corner where the books are located to develop early reading skills. It should be located in a quite spot separate from the other play areas. Pillows can be provided in this area for comfort. Aside from books, other games that are commonly placed here are phonics games and magnetic letter boards. Another play area that is commonly found in a learning center is an open floor space that is allotted for construction play. This area should be provided with blocks of all shapes and sizes since this is the area where children are given the chance to create models of anything they have interest on. Cars, trucks, people, and animal figures can also be placed in this area. Apart from the four basic play areas found in these learning centers, there are other types of play areas which can be included in a learning center’s set up such as sand, science, art, and water centers. Because these are largely optional recreational activities, toys related to these centers can be brought out on certain occasions only.

Toys, like childhood itself, mean different things to different people. To the average European or American parent, a toy serves to keep the young amused and distracted. Now more than ever, with the belief that multiple intelligences can be stimulated in the early years, toy manufacturers are gearing their products towards those than can keep children beguiled, occupied and instructed. For instance, toys should help the child develop his motor skills, and engage him in fantasy and investigative play. For the child, an ornate piece that to adult eyes is essentially decorative and fixed, or a mechanized object kept as a curiosity can count as a plaything. As a result, experts have classified many objects as being on the borderline between toy and decorative object, between puerile replica and collector’s item. Such overlapping cannot be sidestepped nowadays, especially since toy collecting by adults in the United States and some European countries has emerged as a popular form of expertise. Despite such borderline cases, there is wide consensus among toy historians and collectors on what truly makes a toy, a toy in the strictest sense. Boys have played with foot soldiers and horse soldiers. Girls have always had their precious dolls. Although the earliest of these toys have not survived, these remain true and had been so since the third millennium B. C. The earliest known dolls were made of various materials such as wood, terra-cotta and fabric. The period after World War II brought novelties in design and an entire new range of plastics. Mechanical toys became popular as class alignments changed. This fact, coupled with more ingenious manufacturing techniques evolved into fantastic musical automata, animals, and images that utilized clockwork to mimic human movement. The aim for toy makers has been towards movement and the many different methods of inducing it in toys. It has assumed great importance and had become a subject dealt with fully in specialized reference works. Because of new production techniques, an overwhelming quantity of toys, games and amusements for children had been available by the mid 19th century. German inventiveness pioneered novel and intriguing designs, ranging from simple knickknacks in tin or the softwoods, which were known in Britain as “penny toys”, to constructional and educational games that reflected the growing vogue of science in the nursery. English girls during the reign of reign of Queen Victoria, began to follow the customs of their German and Austrian counterparts by learning about housecraft and baby care. By the turn of the 20th century, it was not unusual to find inexpensive dolls, dolls’ houses, and “German kitchens” in middle-class family homes. Today, the spread of modern production techniques has made additional millions of persons more conscious of toys in respect to their function, design and usefulness, and their many cultural aspects as well. And although refinements in the application of radio, electronics, magnetism, dry-cell batteries, and so on, have revolutionized certain toys, the folktoy has come into its own again in India, China, Central Europe, Japan, Mexico, Russia and Scandinavia, thus balancing mechanized trends with the addition of less complex technical artistry and beauty.

Often, a child’s first toy might be a teddy bear or another stuffed animal. Stores are full of stuffed toys, and there are even entire businesses dedicated to customizing stuffed animals. While adults may think that such toys are cute and soft, there is more potential lying inside. Kids at all ages enjoy these toys, sometimes even getting attached to the same toy for many years. Stuffed animals offer educational benefits to kids of all age groups, as listed below:1. Babies: Babies love to touch the surfaces of stuffed toys, feeling their bristly whiskers, soft fur, and hard eyes. They will chew or suck these toys as well, so make sure early choices are designed to be well-loved and washed. Avoid small beads or removable parts. Some babies like squeaky toys. Fur or hair should be short and not easily plucked out. 2. Toddlers: Up until about two or three years, toys should be carefully chosen for durability and safety. Toddlers are learning empathy along with language and names. Different stuffed animals help young children recognize familiar words like cat, dog, bear, and pig – along with the appropriate sound made by each animal. Stuffed toys will receive names and become constant companions. Emotions are tested out on these silent friends – they may be thrown, hugged, hit, and kissed. Early parenting skills are practiced too, so stuffed animals may be fed, have their diapers changed, get put to bed, and sit on the potty. By rehearsing these situations, toddlers work through challenges, understand changing expectations, and demonstrate their observations. Stuffed toys may be a child’s first real friends. 3. Preschoolers: By this age, children start to engage in more imaginative play. Stuffed animals are not restricted by their appearance, so a giraffe can be a princess, an astronaut, a teacher, or even a giraffe. These toys can be included in active play. Kids often share their feelings with stuffed toys and may conduct elaborate conversations. After an upsetting day, a child can come to a stuffed friend and reenact the event, helping them deal with difficult emotions. Like real pets, stuffed animals may even help children become calm. 4. School-aged children: From about five years old, games often reflect kids’ preoccupation with new structures and people in their lives. Stuffed toys can become a whole class of students, the audience for a puppet show, or a gang of pirates. At the same time, kids may be strongly attached to these toys, still sleeping with them and possibly creating new clothes or constructing items to expand on earlier games. 5. Older children, especially animal lovers, may want to collect unusual stuffed animals. Finding an exotic anteater or platypus becomes a passion. Along with this hobby, kids learn about classifying animals, natural habitats, and geography. Visiting a local zoo or even another country offers a chance to understand sciences like zoology and biogeography. Some children sew stuffed companions for themselves or as gifts for friends or siblings. It’s a wonderful way to learn basic sewing skills and pattern-making, involving both fine motor coordination and 3-dimensional math skills.

Electronic learning games have always been a great way for parents and grandparents, who prefer their gifts have some obvious long-term benefits, to buy the children in their life electronic products to entertain and engage them. It is easy to buy presents that are immediately interesting and provide a welcome distraction and electronic games certainly fulfil that role. But, rather than offering straight forward entertainment for toddlers and young children, who are in the prime learning years of their lives, take advantage of their natural enthusiasm to learn by offering a gift that is both engaging and educational at the same time. Educational toys for children offer a compromise for parents who want their children to be technologically savy but without the potential for pure mind-numbing escapism and distraction. Electronic learning games such as the Leapster or Tag Reader are designed to be highly entertaining but are also dedicated to making sure they have a significant educational component as well. By applying simple game structures to essential learning principles these educational devices can impart knowledge with no overt “education”, just play. Playing has always been a way to teach younger children essential life skills and basic literacy and numeracy ideas. Many children’s games teach a variety of specific skills without being explicit about it. Think of hopscotch for example, how many things does a child pick up when they learn to play and repeatedly play this game of hopping on numbered squares? Alot! Board games take this play learning to another level and give it more structure. Monopoly and Scrabble are two of the most obvious examples of games where children have fun learning about reading and maths without realising they are being educated while they play. Interactive educational toys take this concept top the next level by engaging kids with sounds and moving images and asking them to respond to specific commands. Kids love interactive toys, so make sure you offer them one with long-term benefits.
